Rixoffice Markdown Files: Edit .md and Export to DOCX

Write and edit .md and .markdown files in Markdown Studio, then export polished Word documents through the docx engine with one click.

Markdown is where drafts start — notes, READMEs, meeting minutes, documentation — and .docx is where finished documents usually need to end up. Rixoffice covers both ends: Markdown Studio gives .md and .markdown files a proper editor, and the export pipeline turns them into real Word documents through the same docx engine RixDocs uses.

Editing .md files in Markdown Studio

Open any .md or .markdown file from the Home screen, or start a new one. Markdown Studio is deliberately minimal: a clean block editor where content appears the way it will read, not as raw syntax on the left and a preview on the right.

What you get in the editor:

  • Slash commands — type a forward slash to insert headings, lists, tables, code blocks, quotes and more.
  • Task lists — checkboxes that toggle, for checklists that actually get checked.
  • Tables — editable Markdown tables without counting pipe characters.
  • Code blocks — fenced code with the formatting you expect.
  • Frontmatter — YAML frontmatter is understood and preserved.
  • Keyboard-first flow — Markdown shortcuts work as you type, so existing habits carry over.

Everything is stored as plain .md text on your disk, so the file stays portable to Git, static site generators and any other Markdown tool.

Markdown that travels

Because Markdown Studio writes standard files, the same .md can live in a repository, render on a docs site and open in Rixoffice for the day it needs to become a formal document. Nothing is locked into a proprietary flavor.

Exporting Markdown to DOCX

The export path is where Rixoffice earns its place in a Markdown workflow:

  1. Open your .md file in Markdown Studio.
  2. Choose File, Export to DOCX.
  3. The docx engine builds a Word document, mapping Markdown structure to real Word styles — headings to Heading 1-3, lists to list styles, tables to Word tables.
  4. Open the result in RixDocs to add a cover page, headers and footers, or a table of contents.
  5. Save or export to PDF for the final handoff.

The conversion uses the same byte-preserving OOXML machinery described in the DOCX compatibility guide, so the output is a clean, modern .docx that opens anywhere without repair prompts.

Mixing Markdown and rich text

The two editors hand off in both directions:

  • Paste Markdown into RixDocs and it converts to rich text automatically.
  • Export to DOCX from Markdown Studio when you want a file-based handoff instead.
  • Write the whole document in RixDocs when you need tracked changes, comments and page layout from the start.

A practical split: draft in Markdown Studio where speed matters, move to RixDocs when the document needs to look formal, and export to PDF when it needs to stop changing.

Who this workflow fits

  • Developers writing READMEs and design docs that later become specs.
  • Consultants drafting notes that must be delivered as Word files.
  • Students and researchers keeping plain-text notes that occasionally need to be printed and submitted.
  • Documentation teams maintaining a Markdown source of truth while stakeholders live in Word.

What to explore next

Quick steps

  1. Open a .md or .markdown file, or create a new Markdown file from the Home screen.
  2. Write with the slash menu, keyboard shortcuts or plain Markdown syntax.
  3. Organize with headings, task lists, tables and code blocks as needed.
  4. Choose File, Export to DOCX to produce a formatted Word document.
  5. Open the .docx in RixDocs to add cover pages, headers or a table of contents.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown files does Rixoffice open?

Rixoffice opens .md and .markdown files in Markdown Studio, a focused block editor with slash commands, task lists, tables, code blocks and frontmatter support.

Can I convert Markdown to a Word document?

Yes. Markdown Studio exports to .docx through the same docx engine RixDocs uses, so headings, lists, tables and code blocks become proper Word styles in a byte-preserving package.

Can I paste Markdown into the word processor?

Yes. Paste Markdown text into RixDocs and it converts to rich text automatically, so a draft started in any Markdown tool continues seamlessly in the document editor.

Does Markdown Studio work offline?

Yes. Writing, previewing and exporting Markdown are all local operations. AI assistance works offline too if you use Ollama with a local model.
