Getting Started with RixDocs

Learn RixDocs in ten minutes: the Word-like ribbon, typing and formatting text, autosave, saving real .docx files and where every feature lives.

On this page

RixDocs is the word processor inside Rixoffice: a Word-compatible editor with a ribbon interface that opens, edits and saves real .docx files while everything stays on your machine. This page gets you from an empty document to a saved file and shows you where every feature lives.

The ribbon at a glance

RixDocs uses the ribbon layout you already know from desktop word processors. Eight tabs sit across the top, and each one owns a stage of the writing process:

TabWhat you find there
HomeFonts, styles, emphasis presets, lists, paragraphs, find and replace
InsertTables, images, shapes, charts, textboxes, WordArt, links, headers and footers
LayoutPage size, margins, orientation, columns, page color and borders
DesignDocument themes and page appearance
ReferencesTable of contents, footnotes, endnotes, citations and index
ReviewTrack Changes, comments, Compare, Restrict Editing, AI Editor and AI Translate
ViewPrint Layout, Web Layout, Outline, Read Mode, zoom, split view, navigation pane
DrawPen, highlighter and eraser for ink annotations

The AI composer sits outside the ribbon in the toolbar and panel at the bottom, so AI help is always one click away no matter which tab you are on.

Start your first document

  1. Click New Doc on the Home screen, or press Ctrl+N (Cmd+N on Mac) inside any RixDocs tab.
  2. Type a title, select it and apply Heading 1 from the Home tab. The style list also offers Heading 2, Heading 3 and emphasis presets.
  3. Write your body paragraphs under the Normal style. Bold, italic and underline live on the Home ribbon alongside lists.
  4. Open the Insert tab when you need a table, image, chart, hyperlink, textbox or page break.
  5. Press Ctrl+S and pick a folder. The file saves as a standard .docx.

Autosave and local storage

RixDocs autosaves as you type, so a crash or an accidental close never costs you more than a few keystrokes. The working copy lives on your device, and the save dialog writes to folders you own. Nothing is uploaded in the background; files stay on device unless you deliberately use a cloud feature. This is the same privacy model used across the suite — see the byte-preserving engine explained.

Word count and document details

The word count appears in the status bar and updates live. It counts words, characters and pages, which is handy for essays, reports and anything with a length limit.

Open and round-trip existing .docx files

RixDocs is built on a byte-preserving .docx engine. In practice that means:

  • Open a file created in Microsoft Word and the formatting — fonts, spacing, tables, images, headers — appears as the author intended.
  • Edit it freely, then save, and the output remains a valid .docx that Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs can open.
  • Complex features such as track changes, comments and fields survive the round trip, because the engine edits the document model rather than re-rendering it from scratch.

If you are migrating from Word, the Rixoffice vs Microsoft Word comparison covers the day-to-day differences in detail.

Paste Markdown and keep writing

Paste Markdown text into a RixDocs document and it converts automatically into rich text: headings become styled headings, bold and italics carry over, lists turn into real lists and links become clickable. It is a fast path for people who draft in Markdown and deliver in .docx — the same flow the Markdown Studio editor uses for export.

Frequently asked questions

What is RixDocs?

RixDocs is the word processor inside Rixoffice. It uses a Word-like ribbon interface, opens and saves real .docx files with original formatting intact, and works fully offline on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Can RixDocs open my existing Word documents?

Yes. RixDocs opens .docx files directly thanks to its byte-preserving engine, which keeps fonts, styles, tables, images and layout as they were in the original file. Saving writes a standard .docx that Word can open.

Does RixDocs save my documents to the cloud?

No. Documents are saved to folders you choose on your own device, and autosave keeps a working copy locally while you type. Cloud sync is optional and only applies if you explicitly use cloud projects.

Which ribbon tabs does RixDocs have?

RixDocs has eight ribbon tabs: Home, Insert, Layout, Design, References, Review, View and Draw. Each tab groups the commands for one stage of writing, from formatting to review and printing.
